Fundamentals of Academic Drawing: Portraiture
w/Alex Martinez
$539
Delayed start - begins Monday 4/28 and runs till 7/14
7-9:30PM
With a solid grasp of the academic drawing process, students will apply those fundamentals to drawing the most complex subject of all: portraiture. With the guidance of artist Alex Martinez, you’ll work from the classical Bargue plates to understand process and aesthetics; understand how to properly use photography as a reference tool for your own work; and how to translate those skills to working from observation with a live model.
By the end of this course you’ll walk away with a system that you can fine-tune and make your own, granting you confidence in your ability to capture likeness and soul.

Participants will gain proficiency in essential techniques, including proportion, anatomy, light, and color application, with a strong emphasis on color mixing and brush handling. By the end of the course, students will have developed the skills necessary to create expressive and accurate figurative artworks, laying a solid foundation for more advanced studies in figurative painting.
Monthly Independent Study
w/Julian Tejera
$180/month
1-3:30PM
This class is intended for beginner and intermediate students who want to learn at their own pace. There will be lessons and demos, but students will work on their own projects.
Long Pose Figure Drawing
$539
New session begins Wednesdays 4/23 and runs till 7/9
7-9:30PM
Ages 16+
In this 12-week course, students will be guided through the process of composing and executing long-pose figure drawings that feel alive. Perfect for beginners and intermediate students, you will gain a deep understanding of proportions and anatomy, learn strategies on how to use lights & darks to design a compelling picture, and how to expressively use line & tone to capture the subtleties of the human body. Each week you will work with a new model and a single new pose, working up to a longer, 2-day pose near the end. Drawing challenges such as foreshortening or “being in a bad spot” will be addressed in a way that makes them fun.
Long poses often seem daunting, but they offer a rich opportunity for artists to observe deeply the beautiful machine that is the human body in a way that shorter poses can’t.
Painting the Clothed Figure
$539
New session begins Thursday 4/24 and runs till 7/17
(no class on July 3)
7-9:30PM
Painting clothed models provides the artist with various design challenges. How do I fit the whole figure on the canvas? How much of the environment do I paint? What do I do when the fabric changes between poses? How do I paint clothes?
These challenges and more will be addressed at length in this course. Whether you’re a beginner or intermediate painter, you’ll walk away with a clearer grasp of proportions, composition, and color theory.
